Vivid LIVE
Yesterday I spent the day writing about all the different events that will be happening as apart of Vivid LIVE. Though they have ditched the whole curatorial aspect, they have managed to produce one their best line ups yet (well I think). I'm really excited to see Karen O's self described pyscho opera 'Stop the Virgens', boogie to Tom Vek at the Modular party, swoon over Florence and all her pretty dresses, be hypnotised by my favourites Seekae and watch James Murphy's last days with LCD Soundsystem in 'Shut Up and Play the Hits'. SCUBA STYLIN'
High necklines, bold prints, Bondi and surf influences- this Vogue spread has it all. I've never been a massive Catherine McNeil fan but you certainly can't flaw her in any off these photos shot by Max Doyle.

MBFWA
Carl Kapp RAFW 2011 Photo: Jordan Kretchmer
Fashion week is back this year with a new title sponsor on board and a strong collection of old and new Aussie designers. Johanna Johnson will be making her MBFWA debut and I can't wait to see her old Hollywood glamour frocks sparkle and catch the light of the Overseas Passenger Terminal. Another brand making their debut will be print masters We Are Handsome. Zimmermann is off site again this year and after choosing the Throttle Shop (a vintage car dealership in North Sydney) as their venue last year I'm really excited to see where they take their show this year. I'm also looking forward to seeing how Oroton transform a line off accessories into a full runway show. Flowers for Vagabond will be showing and after their group show last year it will be exciting to see what they do with their own show so good luck to them. One of my favourite shows from last year was Josh Goot so fingers crossed the possibility of him showing becomes a reality- according to Frockwriter sass & bide, Dion Lee and camilla and marc are also still possibilities.

Tropfest 2012
Tropfest is in it's 20th year now and is coming up in February. I got the chance got have a chat with last years winner Damon Gameau about his win and life post Tropfest glory.
Damon Gameau won Tropfest 2011 for his catchy, creature-filled, 2 minute, 42 second animation Animal Beatbox – an honour that still has him flabbergasted. “This time last year I was frantically trying to edit and hand it in with 10 minutes to go,” says Gameau, on the phone from India, where he’s part of the cast of the cricket comedy Save Your Legs with Brendan Cowell. “It was a bit of fun.” Gameau, a Sydney-based actor who had memorable part in the movie Balibo, won $5,000 cash, a digital camera and a trip to Los Angeles to meet with film executives. But the Tropfest win was quickly followed by a backlash, in the form of accusations of plagiarism. “The first couple of days were horrible. I guess I wasn’t expecting it and I was naïve… But if you want to make something and poke your head out, you’ve got to be prepared for people to cut it off.” Despite this there have been a lot more positives than negatives, he says: “It’s been bizarre; you just send this film out into the world. Now I think it has been to about 25 festivals.” These have included firebrand documentary maker Michael Moore’s own film festival, and Animal Beatbox even landed an award for raising awareness about the environment. “It’s the most abstract, bizarre thing and it is very inspiring because I did make it for $80 in three days in my mum’s spare bedroom. So it just goes to show if the idea’s there and the intention is right, it can spread far and wide.”

The Films of 2011
Last year when ever I went to the movies I put a note in my phone and tried to decide whether I liked it better than the last movie I saw. Sometimes it was difficult to decide as it was comparing apples with oranges e.g the whimsical story of a princess with super long hair and her pet chameleon (Tangled) compared to incestuous rape, brutal torture and killing sprees in Australian suburbia (Snowtown). Despite this I tried to just go on my initial reaction.
I look at the list in retrospect some look a bit out of place, with technically "bad" movies ahead of Academy Award recognized "masterpieces". E.g why is Friend with Benefits is higher then 127 Hours, when really by all technical merit the later is better? I then remembered that I fainted in 127 Hours and almost vomited (in the scene where he cuts off his arm, feeling a bit sick thinking about it now) where as Friends with Benefits left me happy, giggly and with a rediscovered appreciation for Justin Timberlake reminiscent of his "Rock Your Body" days. Basically what I'm saying is I'm a bad movie critic; I think with my heart, I love what makes me laugh, cry and think but I hate being left going 'What the heck was that about?' and no matter how amazing the director is or how many Oscars it got, if a movie makes me physically ill, I don't like it. Anyway here it is...

When I went to...FOTSun
Beside the beach in the Breakwall Sundowner tourist park Thursday afternoon saw tents erected, inflatable pools blown up and combi vans roll in, all bunking down prepared for the forecasted weekend of rain. Despite this prediction Festival of the Sun lived up to its name and bikinis, thongs and bare chests were out in full force. More affectionately known as FOTSun by locals and frequenters this small festival is one of two festivals in all of Australia that permit a BYO policy which makes for a cheap weekend but a messy one too.The festivals single stage located within minutes walk from all accommodation on site allowed for the optimal festival experience; no running between stages, tossing up between the two headliners or getting distracted by the jagermiester dance tent, the set up was simple and easy.
Music kicked off late Friday afternoon, allowing for many a punters to return from the beach sporting sun burn to boot but that didn’t stop them from rocking out to P-Mac locals The Pixiekills. As the sky went inky black and filled with stars that no city festival could ever offer, the crowd began warming up with Floating Me and Young Revelry before Art Vs. Science hit the stage. Fresh from their ARIA win the boys pumped out their requisite party renditions, and despite touring all this year they sung, played and danced to them like it was their first live show, setting the mood for the rest off the night with many partying late into the evening.
Triple J Unearthed winners Dirty Little Rebels kicked off the next morning and though many a sunburnt punters lay hung over in their hot tents, those that ventured out were served a breakfast treat of young rock and roll talent reminiscent of Grinspoon, with lead singer and Wauchope local Phil Jamison spotted checking them out. The afternoon flew by with Guineafowl and Brothers Grim gracing the stage followed by the bluesy sounds of The Snowdroppers. Hip thrusting front man Wishbone, showed his ability to control a crowd in true rock’n’roll style, instructing everybody to sit down during their cover of Shout, even singling out punters that didn’t to stay down, till he belted out the chorus. We predict these boys will frequent festivals through out 2012 and will creep higher and higher up the bill as they do.
Festival staple Hungry Kids of Hungary were energetic as always, followed by the sultry sounds of Dan Sultan whilst the sun began to set on what was an epic weekend but the festival was still far from over. Ladyhawke closed the weekend and even though she was not the most charismatic front woman, her band made up for the energy she lacked in and got the crowd dancing. Her indie pop hits wrapped up the festival on a high note and though the bands were over party's in tents, cabins and footpaths continued on till the wee hours of the morning, with the sky treating us to a lunar eclipse which was a beautiful end to a wonderful weekend.
