The Films of 2011

Last year when ever I went to the movies I put a note in my phone and tried to decide whether I liked it better than the last movie I saw. Sometimes it was difficult to decide as it was comparing apples with oranges e.g the whimsical story of a princess with super long hair and her pet chameleon (Tangled) compared to incestuous rape, brutal torture and killing sprees in Australian suburbia (Snowtown). Despite this I tried to just go on my initial reaction.

I look at the list in retrospect some look a bit out of place, with technically "bad" movies ahead of Academy Award recognized "masterpieces". E.g why is Friend with Benefits is higher then 127 Hours, when really by all technical merit the later is better? I then remembered that I fainted in 127 Hours and almost vomited (in the scene where he cuts off his arm, feeling a bit sick thinking about it now) where as Friends with Benefits left me happy, giggly and with a rediscovered appreciation for Justin Timberlake reminiscent of his "Rock Your Body" days. Basically what I'm saying is I'm a bad movie critic; I think with my heart, I love what makes me laugh, cry and think but I hate being left going 'What the heck was that about?' and no matter how amazing the director is or how many Oscars it got, if a movie makes me physically ill, I don't like it. Anyway here it is...
